SLM is a free OpenType font based on multi-line text banners that were popular on Internet Relay Chat (IRC) in the 1990s and early 2000s.
The letterforms are based on ones used in IRC channels in the 1990s. The word 'SLM', rendered in this font - usually in bright colours - was a common greeting pasted into the chat by Turkish IRC users. The greeting was later adopted ironically by some English-speaking users.
In 1999, I extended the font to create a full character set. While at university in the early 2000s, I wrote an app for designing IRC banners, called SLM Studio (later IRC Paint), which made use of this font. To create the OpenType typeface, I imported the letterforms from IRC Paint into Adobe Illustrator, and converted them with FontSelf.
I am now gifting this precious item to the world under the WTFPL 2.0 licence.
